What is Airbrush Tanning?

Airbrush tanning is the newest phase in application of self-tanning products. Unlike the products of yesteryear that would turn everything and you orange, the bronzers made today are very natural looking, made from a variety of vegetable extract, and are completely harmless.

These solutions include Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, which works by reacting with the keratin protein in the top, (or dead) layer of your skin.

Just like a natural suntan, the results are temporary, this outer layer of skin is continuously “sloughing” off. Airbrush Tanning is a relatively new process in the application of DHA infused solutions. The solution is applied with the use of a low-pressure airbrush gun, which allows for more even coverage than hand application.

You can get a sunless tan even if you can’t get a real tan.

Sunless tanners don’t need your melanocytes to be in working order. Dihydroxyacetone [DHA], the active ingredient in sunless tanners, saturates the dead skin cells in the outermost layer of skin, where it turns the protein in the dead cells brown.

Sunless tans are completely safe.

Back in the 1970s, the FDA added DHA to its list of safe cosmetic ingredients, and there it remains. Unfortunately, the belief that sunless tanners are hazardous is not uncommon, possibly due to confusion with tanning pills containing beta carotene or canthaxanthin, which were banned by the FDA many years ago.

You can use a fake tan on specific areas.

A sunless tanner can add a glow to just your face, just your legs, just your…well, you get the picture.

How is this method different from spray tanning booths?

Airbrush tanning uses the same basic type of solution used in spray booths; however, airbrush tanning allows for a more personalized and precise application of the solution. We can add more solution to areas where the sun would naturally, such as the bridge of the nose, cheekbones, and shoulders. Because the tanning solution is applied by your own personal technician, there will be no “missed” spots or uneven areas that can occur otherwise, as solution application is monitored and controlled per each individual.
